The Wireless Power Charging Coils (WE-WPCC) product family continues further expansion of transmission and receiver coils. As one of the leading manufacturers for wireless power technology, Wurth Electronics continues to innovate and develop wireless power transfer coils (transmitter and receiver). With those, a broad variety of applications in different branches of the industry can be supported. The coils were tested with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) chips sets of Texas Instruments (TI) and IDT and positively evaluated. Wurth Electronics eiSos is a member of WPC.

Wurth Electronics eiSos expands its portfolio of wireless power transfer coils with four receiver coils. The receiver coils are characterized with an adhesive foil on the backside. This is a major advantage compared with competitor products as it offers a much easier mounting opportunity. The coils stand out through a flexible ferrite shielding and a height below 1 mm. The thin, flexible carrier material is optimal to suppress disturbances above 1 MHz. The coils have a high Q factor and a very-low DC resistance, therefore they are recommended for highly-efficient power transfer up to 200 W. The coils allow a space saving receiver solution in devices which require flexibility in the housing.

P9025AC

The P9025AC is a compact, Qi-compliant wireless power receiver ideal for a myriad of portable applications looking to take advantage of wireless charging technology. The device uses an integrated synchronous full-bridge rectifier and LDO output stage to convert the incoming wireless power signal into a regulated 5.3 V / 1 A output that can be used to charge a battery or power a system directly. The P9025AC operation automatically initiates WPC AC modulation communication protocols with optimal efficiency.

The device includes control circuitry to transmit WPC-compliant message packets to the base station. It uses minimal external components to reduce overall solution area and costs. In addition, the P9025AC employs advanced Foreign Object Detection (FOD) techniques to safeguard the system.

IDT’S TRANSMITTER SOLUTION enables the development of USB-powered wireless charging bases with 75% fewer ICs than competing solutions. The P9038 is a highly-integrated, WPC 1.1.2-compliant wireless power transmitter targeted for A5 and A11-type coils. It is designed to support both USB and AC adapter input voltages ranging from 4.5 - 6.9 V and is capable of supporting receivers with up 8W of power, exceeding the power transfer require­ment specified by the WPC standard.

The transmitter includes integrated full-bridge inverter, current sense, and Foreign Object Detection (FOD) circuitry to minimize overall printed circuit board real estate and Bill of Material (BOM) cost. The 19 mΩ RDS(ON) typical values for the full-bridge inverter output FETs make them ideal for high efficiency applications. A proprietary slew rate control design results in extremely low EMI that is well below the CISPR standard, eliminating the need for a separate EMI filter and further reducing the overall BOM cost.

The transmitter offers output short circuit and thermal shutdown protection to safeguard the device under extreme operating conditions. An enable pin provides on/off control of the de­vice with power consumption of under 600 μA when in the off state.

  STMicroelectronics STWBC

The STWBC is the digital controller for wireless battery charger (WBC) transmitters (TX) from STMicroelectronics, offering the most flexible and efficient solution for controlling power transfer to a receiver (RX) in WBC-enabled applications such as phones, wearables, and other battery powered devices that use electromagnetic induction for recharging. As a member of the Qi Wireless Power Consortium and the PMA (Power Matters Alliance), ST ensures full compatibility with these leading wireless charging protocols and holds certification for the Qi 1.1.2 A11 standard. The STWBC performs all the functions for transmitter control: thanks to the internal 96 MHz clock and supporting both half-bridge and full bridge topologies, it is able to precisely control the amount of transmitted power to match the requirements of the receiving unit in terms of maximizing the efficiency of the power transfer.

The STWBC comes with firmware options to offer customers the ability to personalize their end product without the need of external microcontrollers:

  • A turnkey Qi 1.1.2 A11 certified solution, fully interoperable with Qi enabled mobile phones.
  • API (application programming interface) access to customize the underlying firmware, for example modifying the behavior of the LEDs or GPIOs in response to the receiver behavior and supporting I²C and UART communication within a network.

The STWBC Qi 1.1.2 A11 certified solution is available in the STMicroelectronics STEVAL-ISB027V1 reference design, intended for all Qi compatible receivers such as in Qi enabled mobile phones.

The bq500212A is a Qi-certified value solution that integrates all functions required to control wireless power delivery to a single WPC1.1-compliant receiver. It is WPC1.1 compliant and designed for 5 V systems as a wireless power consortium type A5 or A11 transmitter. The bq500212A, the surrounding environment for WPC-compliant devices to be powered, safely engages the device, receives packet communication from the powered device and manages the power transfer according to WPC1.1 specification. To maximize flexibility in wireless power control applications, Dynamic Power Limiting (DPL) is featured on the bq500212A. Dynamic Power Limiting enhances user experience by seamlessly optimizing the usage of power available from limited input supplies. The bq500212A supports both Foreign Object Detection (FOD) and enhanced Parasitic Metal Object Detection (PMOD) for legacy product by continuously monitoring the efficiency of the established power transfer, protecting from power lost due to metal objects misplaced in the wireless power transfer field. Should any abnormal condition develop during power transfer, the bq500212A handles it and provides indicator outputs. Comprehensive status and fault monitoring features enable a low cost yet robust, Qi-certified wireless power system design.

The bq5101xB is a family of advanced, flexible, secondary-side devices for wireless power transfer in portable applications. The bq5101xB devices provide the AC/DC power conversion and regulation while integrating the digital control required to comply with the Qi v1.1 communication protocol. Together with the bq50xxx primary-side controller, the bq5101xB enables a complete contact-less power transfer system for a wireless power supply solution. Global feedback is established from the secondary to the primary in order to control the power transfer process utilizing the Qi v1.1 protocol.

The bq5101xB devices integrate a low-resistance synchronous rectifier, low-dropout regulator, digital control, and accurate voltage and current loops to ensure high efficiency and low power dissipation.

The bq5101xB also includes a digital controller that can calculate the amount of power received by the mobile device within the limits set by the WPC v1.1 standard. The controller will then communicate this information to the transmitter in order to allow the transmitter to determine if a foreign object is present within the magnetic interface and introduces a higher level of safety within magnetic field. This Foreign Object Detection (FOD) method is part of the new requirements under the WPC v1.1 specification.

IDT Reference Kits

The P9038-R-EVK (transmitter) and P9025AC-R-EVK (receiver) reference kits form a turnkey wireless power solution that can be used for immediate prototyping. An associated layout module enables direct instantiation on to a system board, while an optimized and fully-tested Bill-of-Materials (BOM) takes the guess-work out of component selection. Foreign Object Detection (FOD) tuning is supported via selectable pre-programmed curve settings and technical documentation. The 5 Watt, 5 Volt solution is suitable for a wide range of applications, including PC peripherals, furniture, medical devices, and other portable devices still hindered by traditional contact-based charging bases or cables.

The STEVAL-ISB027V1 is a Qi 5 Watt wireless battery charger transmitter evaluation board based on the STWBC digital controller for wireless battery charger transmitters.
