These automotive photocouplers are offered in four families: IC outputs, transistor outputs, photovoltaic outputs, and MOSFET outputs, also known as photorelays. Ranging from 1 to 20 megabits-per-second, IC output photocouplers are perfect for communicating over an isolation barrier. The main characteristics of the transistor output photocoupler are similar to a transistor. The current-transfer ratio varies between 50 and 900. Two different photovoltaic output photocouplers are available, each employing a photodiode array for coupling. Their primary difference is the internal control circuit, allowing the TLX9906 to turn off 80 percent faster. Photorelays are ideal for replacing traditional mechanical relays, with the greatest benefit being the solid-state functionality, allowing for superior longevity.
