ST uses three technologies. The three technologies are called Bipolar, Multi-Power BCD, and ViPower. All the new designs use the Multipower BCD and the Vipower technologies. The ViPower technology is a vertical technology that allows for very low RDSon per area of silicon. The drawback of a vertical technology is the difficulty to integrate logic and analog functions. When high end logic must be integrated (for instance the I/O Link protocol in the future L6360/62), the multipower BCD technology is chosen. This portfolio reflects these constraints. Bipolar is a very old technology thus new products do not utilize this technology.
