One of the major protections is the short circuit and over-current protection. Remember that the load is between the Vout and the ground. If this pin is short-circuited, the IPS limits the current and the board is not destroyed. There is also the loss of ground protection, so if the wire is cut between the ground and the load, there is open load detection. The over-temperature protection is not just a simple shutdown, but also a management of multiple over temperature events. The fast demagnetization allows safe removal of the energy from a coil and of course these products are designed to meet stringent ESD requirements.
