As users evaluate alternative power management solutions for the best fit, they need to consider factors beyond operating efficiency. For example, a size comparison based on the regulator’s package alone often is a false indicator of the total solution area. While the LTM4624 requires as few as two ceramic capacitors and a single resistor, others have larger external component counts due to larger minimum output capacitance requirements or external compensation networks. If load transient response is an important factor, look carefully at the amount of output capacitance and slew rate of the load current step which may be slowed down to improve the perceived responsiveness of the regulator.
