A pyroelectric infrared sensor, also known as a proximity sensor, is basically a short distance human detection sensor. Some of its features include SMD reflow capability, wide view angle up to 60°, compact and low profile, and most importantly, it consumes very little power. Energy saving is an important factor to consider when designing an application. A typical infrared sensor sends out a beam continuously, and when it reaches an object or a human it detects it; therefore, it always needs to be powered on. KEMET's proximity sensor remains in sleep mode and only turns on when a human is in detection range, which saves a lot of power.
