This slide lists some terms used in this presentation. These include USB 3.0, also known as SuperSpeed USB, which is a current USB standard. USB 3.0 is 10x faster than USB 2.0 and distributes 1.8x more power. In addition, it is also backwards compatible to USB 2.0 traffic. A USB 3.0 PHY launches and receives USB 3.0 data. A USB 3.0 Host, such as a PC, directs traffic flow and distributes power over the bus whereas the USB 3.0 Device, such as a hard disk drive, is a peripheral on the bus. A USB 3.0 Peripheral Controller is a microcontroller that handles the USB 3.0 protocol and communications with the USB Host. When discussing the HD video standard, it is important to understand the various requirements. Bandwidth is calculated based on video resolution, frame rate, and color bits. For example, to transmit 1080P video uncompressed, users need a bandwidth of 3Gb/s. Compression is a technique used to reduce the bandwidth requirement of an image using mathematical algorithms. However, it can degrade image quality and requires additional ICs to implement.
